FAQs
Q: Will I be able to work and still take the course?
A: Absolutely! Our courses have been designed so that you can balance life with study time, allowing you enough time to work your regular job or look after the kids, or whatever it is that the majority of your daytime hours are used for. You do not need to quit your job to accomplish your course! This is also great for anyone wanting to retain or train to establish a second income from home. Many MTs also work weekends to add to their existing income. Once you are a trained MT and have established your career, you will find flexibility with online work. We make it easy for you to study and work as you choose.
Q: What necessary equipment does the course require?
A: We provide you with the manuals needed for your Basic Medical Terminology and Anatomy Course (see course specifics). All you need is a pen to study this course and the textbooks we provide. In the Advanced Transcription Course, you will be required to provide your own computer. This includes an internet connection (preferrably high speed) with an e-mail account, a computer with Word 2003 or later, a printer and a digital wave player. We will provide information as to the ideal software suites and their respective websites. Wave players generally cost $85. The other programs used for the Advanced Medical Transcription portion are free!
Q: Do I need a computer to actually start the course?
A: No. The Basic Terminology and Anatomy Course consists of a textbook and weekly tests. Tests are accomplished by returning them to us via fax or scanned to email. Once you are ready to start the Advanced Transcription Course, you will need a computer, wave pedal, a good transcription head set (about $25) and your home work space. This is the required equipment to enter the MT world as a professional. Clients want to know you both have and know how to use the equipment before they hire you! Most new computers within the last five years are up to date with the necessary hardware. No need to purchase anything new. MAC and Windows OS are used by many of our students.Q: What are the admission requirements?
¤ A graduate of a senior secondary school or GED equivalent
¤ Adult student status is acceptable (Over 19 with no GED)
¤ Minimum typing speed 45-50 wpm
¤ Knowledge of Word 2003 or later
¤ Good grammar and English skills
¤ Ability to work independently
Q: Will I receive a certificate?
A: Yes of course! Upon completion of the full course, a Certificate of Completion will be granted. This does not certify you as a medical transcriptionist, but it does certify to any potential hiring agency that you have completed the course material as outlined. This is what future employers want to see, an actual course of study completed. It verifies that you have taken a structured course which teaches the specifics necessary for this type of work. Your Certificate Of Completion should be copied and emailed along with your resume to any potential employers. Most employers do not require you to be a certified MT to consider you for employment.
