FAQS
How
does our course differ from other medical
transcription training? (This is our #1 question
frequently asked)
Our course
material for the Advanced Transcription portion is
unique to us. No other company has our material.
This material was developed out a desperate need to
improve the type of overall training other companies
were providing through their courses. We aim to
train a well rounded MT. Most college level
courses use very old material from at least 25 to 30
years ago, and have not revised their material, which
is far too general in this day and age of technology
and advances in medicine. Our course encompasses
up to date terminology, procedure terminology, etc.
What are the
Admission
Requirements?
A graduate of a senior secondary
school or GED equivalent.
Adult student status is also acceptable.
Minimum typing speed of 50-60 wpm
Knowledge of word processing unit, ie Word 97 or Word
2000 preferred
Good grammar and English skills
What Necessary
Equipment Does the Course Require?
We provide you with
the manuals needed for your Basic Course. In the
Advanced Course you will be required to provide
your own computer and work station. This includes
internet connection with an email account, a computer
with Word 2000 or higher for word processing, a
printer and also for the Advanced Course, a digital wave
player (please do not purchase this until you are
ready to start the Advanced Medical Transcription
Course). We will provide information as to the best purchase and best
links.
Your computer
should be updated with more RAM if it is an older
system; which
is also inexpensively gained. Also, if you have an older
computer, it would be recommended to start with
something more up to date, as older computers tend to
have problems with newer technology and size of sound
files etc. (At least that is our experience working
with many MTs and our recommendations are an update).
If you are unable to do this, please have your current
computer evaluated for efficiency, with a minimum of 128
MB of RAM or more preferred), sound card, Word
2000 or higher, USB port or serial port. (All newer
computers come with most of
these options already).
High speed internet
is also preferred once the Advanced Course starts as
you will be transferring digital sound files for
transcribing each day.
What
exactly is
a medical transcriptionist?
Physicians
dictate patient visits from either hospitals, clinics,
or private practice. A transcriptionist is a
skilled professional who is able to take an audio
voice file from a physician and transcribe it into a
text file, for either computer storage or paper
storage format, or both. This allows physicians
to have a text file of all their patient visits.
Therefore, knowing how to speak the medical language
and then transcribe it into text format is the
transcriptionist's job. Since there are
variables as to how well a transcriptionist is taught,
and how extensive their terminology vocabulary, this
will determine the level of difficulty or advanced
terminology which they will be able to work, ie clinic
work, as opposed to hospital work etc.
Do I
need a computer to start the course?
No. The Basic
Terminology Course can be done remotely, by returning
your weekly tests by fax or mail. Once you are
entering the Advanced Transcription Course though you
will need a computer workstation and equipment.
This is to your advantage as clients want to know you
have the equipment ready and know how to use it,
before they hire you.
LEARN FROM
HOME- Distance Learning. What is distance
education?
Our course
provides students the ability to learn from the
comfort of their own homes. Working with distance
education allows your choice of variable work
environments. It also allows you to work around a
schedule that suits you best. Students choosing this
method must be highly motivated, well organized, and
be able to work independently. While our instructors
and staff will provide information you need and test
results, it is an environment that allows you to
develop the skills of independent learning, which is a
valuable skill in the online medical transcription
world.
Will I
receive a Certificate?
Yes. Upon completion of the full course, a
Certificate of Completion
will be granted. This does not certify you as a
medical transcriptionist (which is an entirely
different thing), but it does certify to any potential
hiring agency that you have complete the course
material as outlined. This is what future
employers want to see. It verifies that you have
taken a structured course which teaches the specifics
necessary for this type of work.
Will I be
able to work and still take the course?
Absolutely!
Our course has been designed so that you should be
able to accomplish it by putting several hours a week
into study, but you should have enough time to work at
your regular job or look after the kids or whatever it
is that the majority of your daytime hours are used
for. You do not need to quit your job to take
our course! This is also great for anyone
wanting to retrain or train to establish a second
income from home. Many medical transcriptionists
(MTs) work part time in the evenings to add to their
existing income. Many MTs also work weekends to
add to their existing income. Once you are a
trained MT and have established your career, you will
find flexibility with online work.
